My Five Step Method to Hosting Women's Circles

Writer: Kristen RudKristen Rud
This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions around here....

'Kristen, how do I host circles like this for the women in my life?'

Your Ancestors Gathered

Women have been gathering in circle since ancient times to share wisdom, learn from each other, deepen their connection, and heal. In all nature-based cultures, women gathered in circles to discuss spiritual matters, share stories, and make decisions. They gathered to share herbal remedies, sing, and celebrate the changing of the seasons. Some even gathered to birth their babies, being fully supported by the wise women of their communities. In modern times, women circles have regained popularity as we connect back to our roots and focus on healing through building community. This art was lost overtime in our culture, largely in part because of witch trials and demonizing of women in medicine or healing. Later, circles of wise women diminished more as women began entering the workforce during the Industrial Revolution. This work is within us. When we gather women in circle, we co-create by honoring all lineages, sharing stories, and connecting to bring lost wisdom forward. There is medicine in this for every woman present.

When women gather, lineages heal and ancestors smile.

Here's the simple method to the madness-

Step 1. Set your intentions and call in the energy! This is the most important part. We bring women together to honor how unique we all are, while simultaneously recognizing our Oneness.  We share stories and pass down wisdom. Connection is the key.  This is a great way to start building a community of like-minded women.

"For centuries, oral storytelling has connected individuals to their communities' history. In traditional cultures, this led to stories that explain the origins of the first people and everything in the natural world, including what brings rain and what makes the sun rise and set. There are teaching stories about planting, herding, weaving, getting along with others, healing, dying- and about birthing. Before initiates undertook a rite of passage or a vision quest, stories informed them about what to eat and drink, how to find herbs for healing, and landmarks to look for to ensure completion of their personal tasks." -Pam England, Ancient Map for Modern Birth

Step 2. Figure out the Logistics: Choose a location, date, time, etc.

Note- your living room or a park is a perfect location to keep costs down. You can make a pot of tea and offer a nourishing appetizer or crockpot soup.  Allow other women to bring treats and support you. Don't make this stressful- let connection be the key.

Step 3. Choose a theme: You can get creative here. Celebrate a certain holiday or astrological event, have a 'make & take' craft-based event, lead a ritual, or focus on a certain topic for conversation.

IE- Red Tents, Solstice/Equinox celebrations, Period Talk, Vision Board Workshops, Pregnancy Circles, etc.

Step 4. Create an outline. Avoid overwhelm by knowing where you're going next, while staying flexible with the flow of your event. (sample below)

  • Guest arrival

  • Introductions & Tea (have an intro question thats related to the intention)

  • Meditation, reading or journal prompts to tune in

  • Space to share

  • Ceremony, art experience, ritual, etc.

Step 5. Share about your upcoming event with the women in your life. If they don't know you're gathering, they don't have an opportunity to show up. Lead with your intention. The right people will come. :)
